International Student Identity Card: necessary for at 13 year old in Rome?

Is an International Student Identity Card necessary for a 13 year old to get discounts on admissions to museums and sites in Rome, or would a local Canadian High School Identity Card or a current passport suffice?
Getting and International Student Identity Card is expensive and time consuming.
In particular, the Vatican seems to require this card, but I am hoping that they would accept an alternate proof of age.
Thanks in advance for your responses!

His passport will be fine...and you should all carry your passports on you anyway. For many attractions, children under the 18 of ANY citizenship are free. I don't see on the Vatican's website that they require High School Identity Cards for reduced tickets for ages 18 or under, just proof of age. The Identity Card requirement applies to STUDENTS 19-25.

"It is possible to reserve a ticket at a reduced price for children aged between 6 and 18 years old (18 years included). It is also possible to reserve a ticket at a reduced price for students up to 25 years of age on presentation of a student identity document or a valid International Student Card on the day of the visit.*"

They differentiate between "children" and older "students".

A backup discussion, although it's 19 and not 18 for required student IDs:
