international pass for sights

Has anyone purchased an National museum pass? How well does it work? We're hoping it will shorten the time we have to spend it lines. Is it worth its purchase and does it work for all of Italy?

I've never heard of such a pass that's good for the whole country. Where did you hear/read about it? What cities are you going to and when? Post that information here to get more helpful responses.

No I've never heard of a National Museum Pass for all Italy. The Roma Pass covers National Museums and National Archeological sights in the city of Rome and a few near by sights like Ostia Antica. Only the first two sights visited are free. The remainder are half price. The pass comes with a three day pass for zones 1-2 of Rome's mass transit system. The pass is good for three days. Perhaps the fact that the Roma Pass only covers National Museums causes confusion? I just discovered the Omnia Vatican Pass which is really just the Roma Pass plus a separate pass for Vatican Museums, gardens, and St. Peters, plus a free hop on hop off bus tour. It promises fast track lines for the Vatican sights. It also claims MP3 audio guides. But I don't know anything more about it than what I see on it's website. If there is a National Museum Pass for all Italy, it would be good to know about it.

Thank you for clearing that up for me. I must have misunderstood what I was told. I think he might have been talking about the National musuem on the Rome pass. thanks again for your information about the Rome pass. Sounds like a good deal. This is my first time in Europe and learning a lot from this site. Could anyone tell me is it better to purchase this Rome Pass in Italy or here in the states before I leave? If purchase in Italy where would be the best place to purchase?

We had a long discussion about the omnia pass on the TA site and after doing the math the omnia pass is not worth the 85 euros. It is still only valid for 3 days and there is no way to visit enough of the sites to cover the cost of the pass.
I would suggest just sticking to the romapass for Rome or booking sites independently. Donna

There's no advantage to pre-purchasing the Roma Pass as you have to collect it locally like will call tickets in the same places that you would buy it. The Tourist information centers at Roma Termini and the airport in Rome will both have them. Various other places including some of the museums also sell them, but as you have to stand in the long museum lines to get them, that doesn't make much sense. Get it at the airport or Roma Termini. If you go to the Colloseum-Forum-Palitine area and one other big museum, the Roma pass is worth it. The Omini pass is probably not worth it unless you really want hop on hop off tourist buses. Skip the Vatican Museum line, if that's on your list, by getting tickets on line before you go. There is a 4 euro price for the reservation fee. Visit the Vatican when your Roma Pass is no longer valid if you are there for more than three days. Vatican reserved tickets are e-tickets. By the way, the Vatican Museums are open Friday night by reservation only, and much less crowded then.
