I live in Mexico and hold a Mexican Drivers License and a Residente Permanente card - I am however a US citizen and have a US passport. How do I obtain an International Drivers Permit? Each Country (US and Mexico) ask for a valid Drivers License and Passport to issue and IDP????
IDP are issued by local Automobile Associations. I presume there is one in Mexico. All you need is your driver lic. And two pictures.
Debi, if you don't have a local AAA office, you can send for one by mail thru the National Auto Club. Only the AAA and NAC are licensed to provide real IDP's. I would use your current Mexican driver's license. http://www.nationalautoclub.com/idp_faqs.htm "Simply print the International Driving Permit Application, complete the application entirely, enclose two (2) original passport size photos and a signed clear photocopy of the front and back of your U.S. driving license, include IDP fee payment of $15.00 along with applicable shipping & handling fees, and mail everything together to: The National Automobile Club, 373 Vintage Park Dr., Suite E, Foster City, CA 94404." Call them if you have any questions!
Thanks Roberto - I can't seem to find any similar sort of Mexican Automobile Association, but have put out a call for info within the community here. Thanks Steve - as stated I have a Mexican Drivers License and US passport so your suggestion won't work for me. I have also just contacted the US Consul here in Merida to see if they know what I can do. fingers crossed. Debi in Merida
Debi - do disregard Steve's answer as it does not apply for those with a Mexican license, only a valid US state license. According to drivers.com, the Associacion Mexicana Automovilistica is the approved issuer of IDPs for Mexican drivers licenses. I don't know if having a US passport will be a problem, but generally an IDP is issued to those with a valid drivers license and proof of residency in that state or country. So you may need to show your Mexican residency permit. Hope that helps.
Debi:
This is the website for the Associacion Mexicana Automovilistica with the info re the IDP (in Spanish: Permiso Internacional de Conducir or PIC). www.ama.com.mx/Pic.asp
OMG Douglas and Roberto, you guys are awesome. I am in contact with AMA and will post as soon as I have followup info. Thank you both so much! Debi
Debi, You will only need your Driver's License along with two Passport-sized photos and of course the fee to obtain an I.D.P. The primary purpose of an I.D.P. is to provide a translation of the terms of your home D.L. so that it can be understood in several languages. Any restrictions such as driving with corrective lenses will be noted on the I.D.P. The link provided in one of the previous replies for the Mexican Auto Association should allow you to obtain an I.D.P. with your Mexican D.L. Happy travels!
