So, we're driving in Italy. We leave in 2 weeks. Do we need an international drivers license, and if so which is the best way to get one - expedited? Thanks!

Yes you need an international drivers license and you need to bring the one from the states. I got pulled over in Italy by the police and they wanted to see both.

Actually what you want is an International Drivers' Permit or IDP. Although often debated, it is a legal requirement for US drivers in Italy. For more info, you might read this.

The International Driving Permit is available at AAA offices. People at the office will take your passport size photo and attach it to the Permit. You will then pay the money, I can't remember how much, and there you go.

Just got an IDP about a month ago. Cost, including pictures, was $23. As Monte noted, you will leave the AAA office with the IDP in your hand.
