International Driver's Permit by IAA

Does anyone know if a Driver's Permit made by the International Automobile Association (IAA) is valid in Europe? Is it recognized the same as the one made by AAA?

I would put an IDP by IAA as "Sketchy", and even worse, expensive compared to the AAA. They may be completely legit, but why risk it?

The UN Convention that developed the IDP also designated organizations authorized to issue IDP's, in the US that is the AAA and the AATA. So as a US Citizen, getting one from the IAA, whoever they are, could invalidate the document. The IDP is basically a certified document, similar to a form witnessed by a Notary Public, basically they are saying that your license is valid in your home Country. How the IAA can certify that for 10 years (as one option) raises flags for me. The AAA will only issue an IDP good for one year.

Here is a page from the Federal Trade Commission, maybe that will give more detail/

Edit: A concerning quirk about the IAA website, is that they keep referring to the document as an International Drivers License, that in itself raises a flag.

This has been asked before and it is not legit. Keep in mind that the AAA is a legal document approved by the gov't. It is not just a computer form.

If you Google International Drivers Permit and scroll down the page you will find an entry on IDP scams from the FTC (an organization we can trust) and it lists two sources, AAA and AATA, the American Automobile Touring Alliance, as the only agencies authorized by the State Department to issue IDPs. I would let my local geography dictate which one I used. The important thing is to get one if you are going where you need one. Pay absolutely no attention to what someone at a rental counter tells you about not needing one, They make their money renting cars and will not be sitting in the drivers seat if you get stopped.

According to the Points Guy: The U.S. Department of State has authorized two organizations in the U.S. to issue an IDP: the American Automobile Association (AAA) and the American Automobile Touring Alliance (AATA). Cost from either one is $20.

Actually, the characteristic is not citizenship but residency.

For example, I'm a U.S. citizen but live in France. Consequently, I have a French driver's license. My IDP (in French, PCI) is issued by ANTS (Agence nationale des titres sécurisés), the French agency responsible for issuing secure documents.

It costs nothing and is good for three years or until the license expires, whichever is sooner.

I don't need the IDP for travel in the EU but I do when I want to drive while visiting the U.S., Canada, or other non-EU county.

I've long thought the IDP arrangement in the U.S ($20 and only good for one year) is a bit of a rip off.
