International ATM fees

Hi all,

I'm sure this subject has been covered in the past, but I can't find any information about it. I was wondering if any of you international travelers have current information regarding international ATM fees. In the past, we had a local bank that did not charge fees for international ATM withdrawals from our checking account. However the have since changed their policy so we are looking for an alternative. We do have both American Express and Capitol One that do not charge credit card fees, so I'm looking for a bank that does not charge fees for ATM withdrawals internationally, (or domestically, I guess). Any help is appreciated.

Linda I opened a Charles Schwab checking and brokerage account online (no fees) and received a debit card for the checking account. They have no ATM fees and if you are charged a fee by the ATM machine they will reimburse the fee. I opened it with the sole purpose for ATM's in Italy and it worked like a charm. I used it at the Pisa airport and over in the Cinque Terre. dave

Yes, it has been covered and is being covered in multiple threads that talk about getting cash for European trips. But here goes ...

Capital One 360 offers a MasterCard Debit card that has zero fees. None. Zip. Zero. NADA. The rate you pay for foreign currency is what you see on Google. I have used one for over 10 years and have never paid more than a penny difference per transaction from what Google quotes as the exchange rate. You can apply for the 360 Debit card online (in fact the entire 360 offering is online) and fund it through a transfer that also costs zero extra if you start it from the Capital One end. There is no minimum balance required to open the account or maintain it (just as long as it is more than zero). Just make sure it is the Capital One 360 account as some of the other Capital One accounts do charge fees. The card has worked for me everywhere in Europe at ATMs with no problems at all.
