My college-age daughter and I are traveling by train for 3 weeks in Europe. Our final leg of the trip is Interlaken to Rome. Where can we break up our trip over night at? Genoa seems too far from the train station, Florence and Milan too busy. Any suggestions of where to stop along the way overnight and enjoy a calm relaxing day trip before leaving for Rome?

Karen, The Cinque Terre would be a perfect location as an intermediate overnight stop. The trip from Interlaken to Monterosso is about 7.5 hours (minimum two changes). You could stay in any of the five towns, and then depart for Rome from La Spezia Centrale (just south of Riomaggiore). With a direct train, travel time is ~3H:45M. If you do decide to stop there, it would be a really good idea to pre-book your Hotel well in advance! Happy travels!
