My wife and I will be driving from Orvieto to Lucca in a couple of days and would like to stop at an interesting town on the way for lunch. According to google maps we can leave the freeway at Betolle and drive through Tuscany to just south of Florence. Anyone have a recommendation for one or two stops we could make to do a little sightseeing and have lunch?
There is the beautiful Sant Antimo Abbey, a few kilometres south of Montalcino. A perfect picknick spot.
If you enjoy driving on country roads, consider going from Betolle to Siena, and then taking the SR 222, through the Chianti wine region to Florence. It is one of the most iconic drives in Italy, and you could stop at one of the classic Tuscan villages along the way - Radda in Chianti, a slight detour, would probably be my pick - for lunch. Montecattini Alto, or Montecattini
San Miniato
Or you could go through Pisa on the way, I have done that.
