Intercity trains tend to be older traditional stock but comfy. Because seats are reserved you shouldn't have to stand. It makes fewer stops than a Regionale. They won't exceed 100 mph normally.

Regionale trains are the basic workhorse trains in Italy. They stop at every stop. Traditionally, their runs are not more than a couple of hours. This has changed in recent years with the Regionale Veloce that does make longer runs. The InterCity train is an older train that was designed for longer runs. They don't make as many stops as the Regionale train. No seat reservations permitted on the Regionale train. They are required on the InterCity train. On most InterCity runs, you can buy the early discounted tickets online for 9Euro.
