Insects in Italy

How bad is the mosquito problem in Italy in July (Venice, Florence, Ombria, Rome)? Any suggestions for how to deal with it? I've heard about the IPod dowload for mosquito repellent but it is only for ITouch and IPhone.

Ok I'm totally confused...an IPod can keep away mosqutos?!?
As for the bugs. They can be pretty bad. You can pack some OFF, or buy something from a pharmacy when you get here. They have some smaller to pack options in the pharmacies and supermarkets here. There are wetwipes that you can wipe repelant on your skin. and just last week i found (for lack of a better word) stickers that you can put on your clothes. You scratch the sticker every so often and it releases a citronella smell to keep the bugs away.

I, too, am curious about the "iPod download for mosquito repellent"?? I didn't even know mosquitos listened to iPods.

On ITunes, search for Mosquito Repellant (or Google IPod Mosquito Repellant). You can buy an application which emits a sound which repels the mosquitoes. But its only available for IPhone and ITouch.

But how do you get the mosquitos to wear the ear buds?:)

The app is based on principles of homeopathy. Its doesn't need to play a sound, the app just needed to be near another app that actually played the sound that repelled mosquitoes at one time.

The app also keeps away earthquakes... at least 99.99% of the time. ;)

What about vampires? Will it repel vampires, too?

Hi Karen. I don't know if this really works or not, but I read last week that Bounce drier sheets work as an insect repellant; you rub them on your skin & supposedly it will keep the little pests away!! Happy travels.

Earlier this month I was all over Rome, Umbria, Tuscany and CT and never saw a mosquito.

Of course, they may have still been in Arkansas on vacation.

I've never been to Italy in July (can't stand the heat), so can't comment on insects then.

the bounce dryer sheet does work great.... you dont even need to rub them on you..... just put a fresh one in your pocket each day and mosquitoes stay away!
I was in africa last year (malaria!) and never saw a single mosquito with my dryer sheet...

Unfortunately I know a lot about mosquitoes, living in northern Minnesota.... put a Bounce sheet inside your hat... works great! My friends tell me anything lavender also works, but I've never tried it... lavender oil, hand lotion, etc.

Cindy from Ely, I've been to Ely numerous times--one of my very favorite towns in the US (and for folks who do not know how to correctly pronounce it, in Italian it would be "Ili")--and I've had run-ins with the notorious "Minnesota state bird" in the BWCAW. About Bounce in the hat--do you attach it to your hat/cap or put it in/under? How does it work? Would it work if you put it in a shirt pocket? How does it work? And is this a tried-and-true way to keep mosquitos at bay?
