Insane bargains on flights to Italy in the next 30 days

This has been going on for several weeks and unfortunately we can't take advantage of them, but Seattle to Rome round trip in the next 30 days is currently $441 (American, British and FinnAir). It's usually about $1200! If you have the flexibility to drop everything, do it.

FWIW, I use airfarewatchdog.com to set up email alerts, but I'm sure other sites do the same.

I am counting the days to retirement.

Sounds like a good price but not quite amazing, given that last year at this time Delta had a blow-out sale for about that same price (from Portland anyway) to many destinations in Europe for much of 2017, including May and September. (I even booked a ticket but canceled within 24 hours and booked a ticket with Alaska miles instead.) In other words, if you'd prefer to travel to Europe in May instead of say December, I'd hold out for better fares, even if not quite this cheap.

We are planning a trip to Italy in the Spring/early summer. What are some tips to get better airfares? This is very new to us.

Set a fare alert for the dates and places you'd like to go - e.g. with Google Flights. For example, if you want to fly to Venice in early May and return from Rome in mid-May, set fare alerts for a set of dates in May and you'll get an email when the fare drops to or below that price. I'd be prepared ahead of time to know what your best routing would be if you could choose - e.g. maybe Delta or AA works best for you from your home airport. So when fares drop, you've already done some homework and know if the fare that went on sale is good for your ideal routing.

it is winter traveling to Europe after the xmas/New Year holiday ends always means lower prices; even more now with low cost Wow and Norwegian airlines entering the USA market

I've found it's best to set several alerts with different dates. Currently on my target city there's a 20% price difference for the same flights a week apart.
