Input and Ideas May trip - 14 nights in Northern Italy

3 nights Lugano( visiting a cousin)
3 nights Lake Como - Mennagio or Bellagio(always wanted to go to Como)
train from Verenna to Verona or Vecenza
8 nights how to split between Vecenze and Venice or another choice? (Was in Venice in the 1980's and loved it.)

We just want to enjoy the culture, food, sights and not rush.
1. Will a car be used and what are the benefits that train travel doesn't offer? where to rent Milano or Verona/Vicenza
2. Any tips to get to Venice Marco Polo Airport? is 2 hours enough time ways to get there if not from Venice?
3. What towns/area to explore and why?
Any must do's, see's, eats when in this region?
Thanks

If I had eight nights, I'd put at least four of them in Venice. Hotel costs are a lot higher there, otherwise I might just camp there and do side trips. Padua and Vincenza are both quite close. Padua has a lot to see: Scrovegni Chapel, cathedral, strollable historic district, Palazzo della Ragione. Vicenza is pretty and was more laid-back when I visited it on a day trip in 2015. I think it might be too small for me to want to spend three or four nights there; I liked basing in Padua. I haven't been to Verona yet. Some other folks on the forum have commented favorably on Ferrara, which is on my list for the next trip to Italy. The train would be the easiest way to visit those places, and it means no parking problems or parking costs.

Many folks just travel around the lakes via boat, train and bus; that's what I've done. Whether there would be a significant advantage to having a car around lake Como, I do not know.

Decades ago I enjoyed short visits to Gandria and Morcote, both near Lugano. They were touristy even then; I don't know what they're like now.

Maybe I spend 5 nights in Lugano and Lake Como area
Then train to Verona or Parma for 3 Nights
Train to Ferrara 3 nights
Train to Venice 3 nights

I would rather spend more time is one place so if I choose 2 which 2?
