Inland or Coastal Route Naples to Amalfi?

Question for the group…we will be flying into Naples in early April and are being driven by private transfer (Aldo Limos) from the airport to Amalfi where we will be spending the next 4 nights. Our plan is to use Amalfi as our base for exploring the area with ferry rides to Positano and other neighboring towns that are likely to give us a very good view of the coast from the water. We have the option of paying Aldo Limo 250 euros to drive us the coastal route, a 3.5 hour drive or 180 for the 1.5 inland ride. We know we are fortunate not to be doing the driving on that coastal route! The question is, given that we will be seeing it from ferries and we have a driver, is the drive itself something we should experience? Your thoughts would be much appreciated!

I would probably vote for the shorter inland route. I got motion sickness on the curvy hilly coastal route. Also after a flight you will be eager to get to your lodging and will not fully appreciate any views. You will be able to see great views on the ferry rides. Best wishes for a great trip! This is a beautiful area.

I would just take a ferry from Naples to Amalfi. That’s a great view! Or save a bundle by staying in Sorrento and then taking ferry to Capri then Amalfi a day later.

I don’t think the coastal drive is what you expect it to be. The drive down from Naples around Mt Vesuvius is flat and slightly run down towns. Then you will cut across the mountains. If you look at the map you will see a big peninsula with Sorrento on the north and Positano on the south. I don’t believe there is any road or town on the end of that peninsula.

The road from Sorrento to Positano was jarring with only a few nice views. Then we got out near the top and had to walk the equivalent of 60 stories down hill to get to the heart of the city. It was so much more comfortable to take the ferry with constant great views and then get out right in the midfle if the city which had very limited auto traffic.

Amalfi is connected by roads to Positano and that stretch may give you see views. But again it’s a better view looking up at the craggy mountains than looking down at ocean..

I think you could hire a local driver in Amalfi once you got settled.
