We will be staying at Hotel Abeedeen, which is about 3 blocks from Termini station. I am looking for some inexpensive but good restaurants within walking distance, where we can get Pizza as friends have said it is a must.
Aberdeen is a lot more than three blocks from Termini. Closer to a half mile, maybe a touch more. Target is a very nice, white table cloth with outside seat just behind the hotel. Ristorante del Giovanni is very local hangout in a basement just a couple blocks to the NW behind Aberdeen. I don't think of these as pizza places but I am sure they serve pizza. We have stayed at both Aberdeen and Sonya and there are several other good restaurants in the area.
You realize that the Spanish steps are some distance away and I would not consider Aberdeen and Spanish being in the same area.
Frank, I guess the map is deceiving. Then you suggest a taxi from the terminal to Aberdeen? According to Rick Steves' and the Hotel Aberdeen comments, it said that Spanish Steps was about 10 minutes walk and Trevi Fountain is about 15 minutes. Are they both walkable? (I usually walk 2 to 3 miles per day and my husband can walk about 1 mile).
May be we have different thought about how long a block is. You can easily walk to the Aberdeen and it is an easy walk but it could be ten minutes. I think those times are for a fairly brisk walker. If you are a slow walker then you may have to double the times. And for the fountain and the steps there is a hill in between them and the Aberdeen. Not a steep hill but still a hill to walk up and then down. We are always walk in Rome but we take our time.
Frank, a 10 minute walk is fine. Is the hill up to the Spanish steps more than a little hill? Is it similar to the hills in San Francisco?
Ate at Ristorante da Giovanni about a week ago and they don't serve pizza. Prices are moderate, and there always seem to be more locals than tourists. Closed Sunday. Best bet for good pizza near Hotel Aberdeen is Est Est Est. It's on Via Genova, about a 10 minute walk down Via Nazionale from the hotel. Also, note that you can walk from Termini to the hotel in about 15 minutes.
Sandra, part of the fun of being in Rome is wandering from site to site and seeing everything in between. When going from the hotel to Spanish Steps, Trevi, Pantheon, etc, you won't be doing the power walking that people do for exercise, so you may be surprised at how far you and your hubby can and will actually walk. I would suggest every time you are headed back to the hotel, take a different route even if just by a block or two. Also, keep your eyes open for a restaurant that has a lot of locals and smells good when you're going by. The hotel can also make some recommendations, but we always make sure we tell them that we don't want a tourist place, but someplace where they eat. We have found some very good places this way. Have a great time!
What a great thread - I'm staying at the same hotel in just a few weeks! Glad to see the suggestions - keep 'em coming!
Thanks!
I'd suggest a cab from Termini to your hotel, so you don't have to haul your bags through some pretty heavy traffic areas.
Reply to Frank, Suzanne and Mimi - question about adapters
All of you are giving us some great advice and I am printing your comments to save.
What about an adapter for my husband's sleep apnea machine? It does have a transformer on it and it does convert to up to 240 but I need a plug adapter.
Can anyone recommend what kind to get?
It has round prongs. Go to any travel store, electronic, etc, and ask for a plug for Italy. All of the Europe is the same except for England. Get two in case you accidentally leave one plugged in somewhere. As back up the hotel will probably have a few laying around from others who have left them.
Is the plug with round prongs also used in Switzerland?
Hi Sandra, There is a terrific little restaurant that is 3 short blocks from the Spanish Steps called Ristorante il Gabriello. We have walked it from your Hotel, but you can also take the metro from Repubblica 2 stops to Spagna. The Spagna stop is at the Spanish Steps and very close to the restaurant. If you have a Roma Card, the metro tarrif is included. Claudio and Gabriello will treat you like family.
Samdra, it is the same.
Any other fantastic recommendations? We'd love a good but not wallet-killing meal and we're staying at the Aberdeen as well. Would love some great risotto and gnocchi, personally ;)
Thank you!
