Per Rick Steve's guidebook on Florence I tried the email for Casa Rabatti in Florence but it didn't work? Has anyone tried this particular local home/hotel?
Try this website www.cross-pollinate.com It is a bed and breakfast and apartment booking agency for Florence, Rome, and Venice. It is owned and operated by an American family living in Rome. I have used them many times and they are great. Also recommended in Rick's book on Italy.
Suggestion for inexpensive lodging in Florence:
B&B near main train station of Florence
Hope it helps.
Joan,
We stayed at Hotel Balcony and it was very nice. Located near the train station. Very clean, safe, wonderful staff and nice breakfast. They do have a website.

We stayed at Hotel Maxim:

We were there for two nights this past July and enjoyed it. It was very clean and the owners were very friendly. The breakfast was pretty good, it has AC and free internet. The best thing of it all is that it is located in the heart of it all! I so miss the sounds of the Duomo bells ringing in the morning. Such a regal sound!
we enjoyed the bellevue house. good luck :):)
I don't know what your budget or area of preference is...but we were there last month and stayed in Hotel la Venere in Florence on Via Cavour....very close to the Duomo ...and loved it!!!
we recently got back from our trip and had a nice cheap stay at Johlea http://www.johanna.it/struttura.php?file=residenze&leng=eng. They have a couple of properties. The free breakfast isn't much though, but it was a pleasant stay, about a 20-30 minute walk to Uffizi.
