My husband and I plan to be in Genoa and then in Naples for several days in each city during the last 2 weeks in March and would like to find clean, safe and inexpensive b&b, hostel or hotel. Help please.
Are you dead set on staying in Naples? If not I would consider staying in Sorrento and making a day trip to Naples from Sorrento. Sorrento is about an hour train ride south, or about a 30 minute boat ride, and a day is plenty of time to explore in Naples.
While a lot of posters recomment Sorento instead of Naples, it is a very interesting and busy city; different from our other experiences in Italy. In June 2009 my daughter and I stayed in Naples for one night at the Hotel Cassanova. It is like a hostel, but with ensuite rooms if you wish. It is at the corner of Girabaldi and Venezia, and with walking distance of the train station. It does not have a traditional street entrance so is difficult to find, but very nice and clean once inside. Enjoy, but be cautious. Not as many English spoken here and traffic signals are not even suggestions.
Lynn, last April I stayed at the Grand Hotel Europa, at 13 Corso Meridionale. It is sort of behind the station. I found it very quiet and I walked everywhere - the ferry port, museum, Castel Nuovo and general site-seeing. I loved Napoli.
Hotel Europeo; in Rick's book, just 100' off of Spaccanapoli, clean, safe, and inexpensive.
I'm one of those who learned the hard way (and I had thought I would love "gritty" Naples). Visit Naples, but don't stay in Naples. Stay in Sorrento and train in as needed. There's a reason that lodging is so cheap in Naples.
