My husband and I will be in Rome 5 nights 27 June to 2 July and or stay coincides with the public holiday on the 29th. We want to do Pristine Sistine tour when in Rome (early entry at 7:30am). It looks like either 30th or the 1st are the days we have to choose from. Which day would be better--and how early should I book. Is there a risk tours would be cancelled bc of the holiday?
You sound like you want to check this visit off the list; so book your Vatican tour 60-90 days in advance since the time you are traveling there, will be about the start of the peak summer travel season.
They've blocked online from booking the holiday 29 of June 2017; hence, there is a low risk of cancellation because of a holiday that already past.
I used to work at a high volume museum: the Art Institute of Chicago; Saturdays were always the busiest. Given my experience and your situation I believe Friday the 30th would be better because that is a workday versus the week-end day Saturday July 1st when possibly locals are off also visiting museums combined with the crowds of international tourists; also if you get there at 7:30 am low possibility for crowds.
I would choose the 30th to visit the Vatican area because Saturdays are usually busier than Fridays. Book the tour as soon as it becomes available if it's what you really want to do. The official Vatican website also offers early entry and early tours during the summer that you may want to check out.
