In Rome: Christmas thru New Years!

We are 4 girls traveling to Rome to celebrate the New Year, but we are each at a bit of a loss regarding how to plan our itenerary in the dead of Winter. I was last in Italy during perfect September weather, so I fear my previous plans would need serious tweaking for this next adventure... can we comfortably explore through Rome as I did then? We do not want to stick out like Americans in how we bundle up, so any warm "Italian-esque" clothing suggestions would be wonderful as well.

Also, we are unsure as to how landing on Dec 26th will affect sight-seeing as it is listed as a holiday - will anything be open? Will taxis/public transport be running? I have been searching thru hostel/hotel recommendations for our budget ($100 or less per day), but any further itenerary suggestions on how we can truly enjoy Rome and celebrate 2009 in Winter weather would be lovely and greatly appreciated! Thank you!

Hi Genevieve,
I visited Rome, Florence & Venice last Dec 13-23. I loved it. It was cold, and everyone was bundled up. The sites were far less crowded and the Christmas markets were great.

I noted that the most popular coat that Italian women were wearing was a white down quilted long coat. I saw them everywhere (different colors as well). I had forgotten a hat, so bought one at the outdoor market in Florence.

You may want to look in to Hotel Italia as a hotel option.

Many Americans bundle up in ski gear/rain gear.

Coat fashions will change every year but if you stay away from ski gear you will feel like you fit in a little more. Layer underneath your coat.
