We have been doing hilltowns very good. But. Have 7 more nights and want special towns but not more hilltowns. Leave from Rome. Love coastal towns. Not big is best. Considering Gaeta for 2-3 days, but where is best. Suggestions please
Public transportation only. Leave Orvieto. In 2 days HELP! ,
Coastal towns are pretty quiet at this time of year, but if the weather is good you might try Porto Santo Stefano on the Tuscan coast. Easy train from Rome to Orbetello then short bus ride to PSS. 2 or 3 nights, max though and only if good weather is forecast. Ditto Gaeta: only if weather is good.
Agree with Laurel, Orbetello is a neat little place--situated on a spit of land on a lagoon. The forecast looks great!
I could sit and do nothing anywhere in that area, but moving around may be tricky.
I'll put in a vote for Tarquinia, about an hour by train north of Rome and right on the coast. If you have any interest in Etruscan civilization, it's an important archaeological area. It also has a nice beach a short distance from the town itself (I know, October beachgoing is a different animal from midsummer lie-on-towel-and-swim).
