In need of some direction. Milan- CT. 7 nights

The basics: 1. Travel by train .2. Fly in and out of Malpensa(only because it is $600 savings over an open jaw route) My 1st plan was to fly into Venice and out of Malpensa. 3. Main focus is to spend 3 nights in the CT. 4. Would like to spend the night before going home at the Hotel Berna in Milan (Fond memories there)

This is our 2nd trip to Italy. The 1st time, we spent time in Milan with day trips to Lake Como & Bergamo. Then to Florence and Siena. We are not opposed to any itinerary, as long as it includes the CT, but would like to stay in at least one other town, maybe 1st night closer to Milan. Then 2 nights on into the region before going to the CT. I thought about heading south about an hour for the 1st night , then head to Lucca, but the train schedules seem complicated, with lots of changes and too much time consumed. I am very open to suggestions. All the contributors on this forum made our first trip such a success. Thank you.

Upon arrival at MXP go straight to Cinque Terre via train (unless your flight arrives late in the evening).
Use Trenitalia.com to find train options.
Departure station is MALPENSA AEROPORTO. Arrival station use MONTEROSSO. Use a date in the next 7 days, departure time use your time of landing.
Spend 3 nights at Cinque Terre. You have 3 nights left, since the last one must be in Milan. If you have never seen Venice and your initial plan was to go there, take a train to Venice from Cinque Terre (6 or 7 hours with train changes). Try to stay in Monterosso for better train options. Spend 3 nights in Venice. Take train to Milan the day before your flight back spend last night at hotel Berna.
You can do the exact same in reverse (Milan to Venice to Cinque Terre to Milan).
