In Italy now and I have a few questions

Hi all,

I’m in Cortona (night 5 of 12). I have a few questions:

  1. I’m trying to reserve tickets to the Accademia for Friday, 12/24 but keep getting an unidentified error. Anyone have advice?

  2. I will have a car for the next three days. I will visit Todi on one of those days. Does anyone have a restaurant recommendation for lunch?

  3. I will also visit Orvieto (public transportation). Any lunch recommendations there?

Thanks in advance,

Sharon

I was in Italy in November. When I attempted to make reservations for the Uffizi and Accademia, I encountered the same response “unidentified error.” I was on my iPad , so I did attempt to open as “desktop” still it didn’t work. When I arrived in Florence, I was able to get a reservation with the assistance of my hotel. If there is a direct phone number, you might want to try it that way.

As to restaurants— in Todi a few weeks ago we really enjoyed Le Scalette, a random choice when our resident foodie’s selection was booked up. Welcoming staff, good food and a warm atmosphere. (Via Della Scalette 1)

In Orvieto, there are so many good restaurants — hard to choose. A longtime favorite is Trattoria del Moro Aronne (Via San Leonardo 7); also Antico Bucchero (Via dei Cartari 4) and Trattoria Tipica La Pergola (Via dei Magoni 9/B).

For a cappuccino and pastry, if you’re arriving by train, there’s Nando, a block or so to the left of the station and funicular. Once in Orvieto I love Dolceamaro on Corsa Cavour.

It may seem touristy, but Cantina Foresi is a great spot to gaze at the Duomo with an Aperol spritz.

Hope you have a great time!

Everywhere we ate in Orvieto six weeks ago was good, but our favorite was Labirinto di Adriano, especially the mixed platter of antipasti. Plus free underground labyrinth to visit.

In Orvieto 2 months ago, we looked at a few places for lunch, but decided on Osta del Re https://www.ostedelreorvieto.com/en/ . The menu is meat-heavy, but the food was delicious, and the server was very welcoming. They’re right in the center of town, just across the narrow street from the Torre del Morro.

For gelato, we went to the artisanal Il Gelato di Pasqualetti https://www.ilgelatodipasqualetti.com/ around the corner, and skipped the Officina del Gelato that we could see from the restaurant.

In Todi my family and I dined at Ristorante Umbria, September 2018. 8 adults 4 children. Check out the website menu. If you are adventurous and are prepared to try the local game orientated menu, it is worth consideration, if not try elsewhere. Asked for recommendation on a local red wine and a dolce white wine from the Veneto. The waiter came back with 2 top choices. Provided small sized pasta meals for our young children, not too sure that is normal. Quality meal. To me was excellent value for money. Enjoyable vistas to the east over rural scenes as the sun set. A slow lunch would be magical.

Parked at Porta Orvietana and took the lift/funicular up to the town centre. Not too sure who enjoyed it the most, adults or children. Parking requires payment. Cannot tell you about credit cards or other payments as I have a Mastercard issued via Qantas which has up to 10 currencies that can be loaded. I had it loaded up with Euros. At the time, the pay station was tap and go. Same as I have at home. Paid for the meal the same way.

A true hilltop town worth allocating some time to. Servicing local community and welcoming to the adventurous traveller willing to give it a try. Not the usual tourist attraction.

Regards
Ron

Hi Sharon-
We couldn’t get ours to work on the official ticket site either. Good thing is, we just walked up to the ticket window today for both Uffizi & Accademia and there was no line. Just walked into each without a wait and went into the museums. (We checked Google maps for each and it gave us a read on how busy.) And we saved a bit of money buying tickets same day : ) Hope you enjoy your visit as much as we did ours!

The Trattoria La Palomba is excellent. It is part of the slow food movement (note the snail symbol beside the door); so you know that the food is fresh and local. The restaurant is located right off the main square. Their carbonara with black truffles was my husband's favorite dish during our most recent visit.
