In Italy is it possible to disembark at one port and embark at another port

In Italy is it possible to disembark at one port and embark at another port? We are on a cruise that stops in Bari and Ravenna. We plan to visit our grandparents and family in their home town, Corato Italy. We found them by accident and seems like the whole town is coming out to meet us. The problem is that the Cruise ship is only in the port of Bari for a few hours and we would like to stay with the family overnight and catch up with the cruise ship in Ravenna. Is this possible?

First, if it were me, I wouldn't pass up the opportunity to visit the grandparents. To me, that would be more important than the cruise although I realize that a large montetary investment is involved. What cruise line are you on? I'm betting that when it departs Bari, it will be in Ravenna the next morning. Could you make it to Ravenna by departure time the next day? I think you can. Here's a LINK to a typical early morning train schedule in mid-September. You can see the times and fares. Getting back to the relatives, is the cruise almost finished or is it in the early stages? If it were almost complete (i.e. Venice), I would consider leaving the cruise and spending a couple of days with family. I'm betting the you would be in for unbelievable hospitality and more special regionale food than you can imagine. I hope this works out OK.

Looks like a plane out Bari to Bologna and then drive to Ravenna is very possible. According to the family the train is not the way to go in terms of time, money and is unreliable. I was surpised that the fligth was only 22 euros and driver about 200 euros. My concern is will the cruise line ok disembarking at one port and embarking at another port. Celebrity hasn't given me a straight answer yet. Only that it's a security issue. Looks like I won't know until I get on board.

Hi Tony. On the cruises I have been on, our passports were taken upon boarding at the beginning of the cruise and not returned to us until the end of the cruise. I would ask Celebrity if you can get your passport when leaving the ship in Bari, as you might need this (especially as you are looking into flying.) Also, read the passenger contract carefully. We were planning on taking a day trip during a cruise stop in Ravenna that we knew might not get us back in time for the ship's departure, and our cruise line's contract said this could void the rest of our cruise (this was with Princess--don't know about Celebrity. Turns out we didn't miss the ship so don't know what the true outcome would have been.) I do, however, agree with other posters that visiting the family would be a great way to use your time, but I would just be careful. I do hope it works out for you!

You need to set this up with the cruise line in advance. This is an area where a travel agent can be very useful. We have done this with Holland America by jumping through a few hoops. It can be done but there are issues with immigrations and, of course, security. It may look like you have jumped ship. You are very carefully with electronic name tags checked off the ship and returned to the ship. They like to know where all of their passengers are. The local authorities like to know that everyone who got off got back on. Do not wait till you are on board. Solve it NOW.
