We were in Florence last month and went to the Yellow Bar for Florentine steak. Delicious!

Enjoy!

A different version of Bistec alla Fiorentine (rather than the slab o' meat) is at Ristorante Toto, near the Arno on Borgo Santi Apostoli. It is sliced rare like an American London Broil, then placed on a bed of slightly-blanched greens like arugula, then dressed with some high-octane balsamic vinegar and cracked pepper. My favorite rendition, for sure.

It's been a few years, but we had a great bistecca alla fiorentina at Trattoria da Guido on via Faenze 34, not far from the Piazza del Duomo. We've eaten there on two separate trips, and have never had a bad meal.

Do any of these places serve a portion smaller than a 1 kilo steak? My wife doesn't eat red meat

For the "bistecca alla fiorentina" these are probably the most famous off my head (not in any particular order):

PERSEUS
LATINI
MAMMA GINA
OSTERIA DE BENCI
COCO LEZZONE
SOSTANZA (detto "I'Ttroia")
PADELLINA (Strada in Chianti)

I usually go to PERSEUS, one of the best, but it's not downtown, it's on the way to Piazza delle Cure coming from Piazza della Liberta'. I've eaten it also at Mamma Gina and at the Osteria de' Benci and they were good. I'm sure other Florentines might suggest others, but the restaurants above are probably the ones Florentines would mention the most.

I'm not a big meat eater, so although I grew up in Florence, I rarely order Bistecca, because unless there is someone with me I can share it with, I can't eat all that meat at once.

Groundhog, we went to Trattoria Sostanza and loved it. Pretty old school, our waiter made the delicious Torta Cake we had for dessert. Really fresh, really busy, nice spot but not a fancy place. Probably good to reserve, or ask your hotel to do that for you.

Groundhog--

Went to Antico Fattore (near the Uffizi, correct?) on our first trip to Florence in 2010. Saw a lot of people being served the Bistec, just massive slabs. Me? I had tagliatelle alla cinghiale, which was in the top 3 dishes of all my meals in Florence. Shards of tender, flavorful wild boar over homemade noodles, barely any sauce at all. Fantastic.

Roberto is right in pointing that times are changing and even locals rarely eat so much meat. However, I would confirm Perseus as the first name in the list and to his list I would add Antica Trattoria da Tito in via S. Gallo. - I would take out of his list Il Sostanza that is too cramped for me.

Groundhog - Hostaria Il Desco offers a smaller version with a sirloin in addition to the traditional t-bone. We ate there twice during our 2014 visit to Florence, and I have to say that was the best steak I EVER had. Check out the reviews on Trip Advisor.

Agree with Dave that Trattoria Il Sostanza is a great little restaurant. The butter chicken is delicious but the sides are excellent as well and I think they have steak. Reservations are a must and I think there are two seatings each evening.

I can recommend Sasso di Dante which is tucked into a corner behind the Duomo. The bistecca is wonderful, as is their other food.
