In early March on the A.C., Is Only Sorrento Open For Business?

Trying to decide what to do after leaving Rome in early March. We have 5 nights before flying out of Naples. First choice so far is Sorrento, but quite a few of the better hotels are still closed for the season. Remaining choices are OK, but do I opt for being in town or the views on the bay? Possibly an agriturismo to really chill? I'd like to be able to walk to restaurants, the train station, etc., not have to depend on a shuttle or public transport to get around.

Or, is anything else on the Amalfi Coast or nearby even an option to stay that time of year? We stayed in Salerno last year in March and loved it, but want something else this time.

Thoughts from the wise?

No interest in Naples?
I have not been to Sorrento, which is not on the Amalfi coast technically--but are you looking for something more scenic than having lots of things to do?

Planning on daytripping to visit the Archeological Museum in Naples for sure--heard that it's a great bookend to Pompeii, which was fabulous when we visited last year. But staying in Naples? I don't know, I was thinking more of a chill end to our trip after Rome, and Naples ain't that!

True true, just feeling out your reasons.
March is tough, fingers crossed for good weather! I'd stick with Sorrento.
If you are worried about too much time there, perhaps one of the towns near Rome could fill a couple days before you head down--something like Orvieto maybe?

If your flight is in the early AM, the last night in Naples is advised as the trip from Sorrento to the airport may be long (and expensive if by private car/taxi).

I'd agree with others: Sorrento is probably the best, with a stay in Naples the night before the flight. We've had to do a shuttle in the wee hours from there to catch a plane and it wasn't fun or cheap. If you want to be walking distance for restaurants, train station, etc. then you don't want an agriturismo.

Sorrento isn't on the Amalfi Coast but you should be able to find more open that time of year than you would in even smaller towns. Naples would be your other option, and I wouldn't discredit that one.

First, our flight out of Napoli Capodichino doesn't leave until 12:15. So that doesn't necessitate us staying in Naples the night before, although taxis from Sorrento to Naples airport are brutally expensive ($60-75 for a 50-minute ride from what I've been quoted so far), so I think we may just take the Circumvesuviana early that morning to Napoli Centrale, then a taxi the rest of the way.

We were planning on taking a daytrip during our stay in Rome to Orvieto, but I suppose we could turn that into an overnighter at the end of our Rome stay, although I hate to backtrack by going north, then going south.

Bottom line is that unless you're on the Freccia routes, it takes a long time to get anywhere. Although I love to ride the rails in Europe, I don't like to spend any more time than necessary on them.

@Jay, check out the (Viaggi ?) bus schedule between Sorrento (train station) and Naples airport -- if the time works for you, it's cheap and WAY more comfortable than Circumvesuviana.

You could see other sights in Naples along with a few hours in the museum. Or you could spend part of the day at the museum and part at Herculaneum - also destroy by Vesuvius, but different from Pompeii. Be aware that both will probably closed around 4-5 pm (winter hours). Or you could visit the museum on the way from Rome to Sorrento - baggage storage at the train station, metro to/from the museum.

Hey Chani!

Naples definitely is part of the agenda for a daytrip from Sorrento. Can't wait to see the museum. What's the word on safety in the Spanish Quarter? As long as there are people around on a weekday, I don't have a problem--I can be vigilant and aware. And I've heard so much about how cool the place is I feel I must visit. And Herculaneum sounds interesting too, but that will probably be based on the weather that day.

And thanks Laura & Kathy--the Curreri Viaggi bus schedule sounds perfect--the 8:30 that arrives at Capodichino at 10:00 for a 12:15 flight.

Hi Jay! Don't let the weather stop you. I ended up seeing Ercolano in the rain (it was intermittent). I rented an audio guide and they put it in a sort of ziplock bag to keep it dry. I had a picnic lunch with me and ended up sitting in one of the roofed houses to eat it.

If you're flying out of Naples, are you planning to spend the night there? One of my few regrets on my visit to Sorrento was not having the time to see something of Naples.

An agriturismo in March might be a little too chill.

For your daytrip to Napoli, when you get to Napoli Centrale, there is a metro stop entrance in the station, get off at the Museo stop. Very direct, short trip, might be crowded at peak times but runs often.
