My husband and I will be in Cortona for a week in October. We enjoy walking around "new" towns and looking at the buildings, etc. We also love to eat and enjoy an authentic Italian meal. We need some recommendations of places to visit and to eat at.
Thank you
Make a dinner reservation at the restaurant in Il Falconiere right below Cortona in the vineyards. Fabulous food!
Beckie,
There are lots of good restaurants right in Cortona that serve "authentic Italian meals". I dined at a small restaurant just off Piazza della Repubblica in the main part of town, and the thought the food was great. Unfortunately I can't remember the name of it.
The staff at your hotel should be able to provide some good suggestions.
Cortona has some great restaurants. Here are two wonderful places that I recall offhand: We had a fabulous Easter dinner overlooking the Piazza at Ristorante La Loggetta. Wonderful wine and lamb — of course.
The Ristorante Ambrosia is charming and is owned by a young, local chef. Try the bistecca florentine there.
We were there for a week, so we ate at several other restaurants; I’ll try to send more names tomorrow!
Definitely have dinner at Locanda al Pozzo Antico. The chef, Paola, also has the Dolce Maria B&B on the floors above her restaurant, and we stayed there last October, and had dinner there on 2 nights during our stay.
Cortona is beautiful! Here's what we did in one day, but could have easily stayed longer

Not far by car Arezzo, and we also liked the tiny village of Lucignano

A bit farther to Perugia, Lago Transimeno, Montepulciano.....
Aside from the villages, which are easy enough to suss out, visit here: https://www.monteolivetomaggiore.it/
Eating here is a lot of fun: https://www.acquacheta.eu/
Were you able to just walk into some restaurants without reservations? I am traveling to Cortona in October and the group doesn't want to commit to a specific dinner every night... curious anyone else's experience!
Based on last October, where we did just walk in to Trattoria La Grotta, I’d imagine it would still be OK to do that this year. Depends whether it’s too large a group, but if one place is full, another nearby will still be able to seat you.
Another vote for La Loggetta. We absolutely loved it there. Also check out Osteria del Teatro.
