Importance of a canal view in venice

We are deciding between the Hotel Campiello and the Hotel Galleris in Venice. Hotel Galleria has the Grand Canal view, Hotel Campiello is in a presumbably quieter area off an alley.
I understand canal view rooms can be noisy. What would you do? Is the noise worth the view, or not. Also no airconditioning at the canal view hotel. Is that imperative for August?
Thank you

We have had both types of rooms. We had a very nice room at Hotel American with two windows (corner room) but the balconey was very small--maybe one chair would fit. There was construction out on sidewalk early in morning and deliveres, of course, arrive by boat so you will have noise. We will return to Venice in the fall and will have a quiet room not on a canal but there is a bubbling fountain outside the room. BTW, mosquitos are a huge problem at times and I imagine August will be plenty hot.

AC in August is a requirement for most folks. It will be hot and humid!!!

Canal view is noisy and lovely but unless you intend to sit in your room and gaze at the view all day is it really worth it? Personally I'd go for a quieter area with AC so i got a good night's sleep and be ready to explore the city the next day. I was in Venice in March and I had a room with slightly obscured Grand canal view and the only time I looked at it was in the morning to see what the weather was like.

I'd go AC over view - you can see the canals from all over the city!

I was in Venice in May and it was hot then. We stayed at the Campiello and found it very nice. The rooms are not huge, but there is air-conditioning, a huge buffet breakfast that lasts you almost until dinner, and the location cannot be beat. We came in from the airport, took the regular boat in to San Zacarria, got off there, and the little Calle de Vin is right there as one gets off the boat. When you want to walk to St. Mark's it is right there, too. If you want to take a boat down the Grand Canal or to the islands, it is right there, yet the hotel is very quiet. I would get the larger standard room. We had 104 with a little balcony. They give a Rick Steves discount if you ask when booking and pay cash. We stayed a while so we put it on our credit card.

In my last reply I said we stayed in room 104 0f the Campiello and it was 108 with a little balcony. The hotel also has an elevator and a computer for you to send and get your email. Jane

Charity, would you stay in a motel in Fresno in August without AC? Thought not. Venice will also have much higher humidity then that to which you are accustomed. Have fun in Italy!

We had a canal view balcony at the Westin Europa - totally worth it. The canal can be noisy during the day with the gondola and boat traffic, but great for taking in the Venice "experience". You can watch gondola traffic and listen to gondoliers who sing. You can watch all of the cruise ship tourist come in and leave. You can watch all the boats making deliveries. Great for people watching.

I stayed at the Hotel Campiello in 2005 and thought it was great. Skip the canal view hotel - how much time do you really plan to spend in there any way? No matter which place you choose, you will have a wonderful time.
