Immigration and passport control for Italy

We are flying to Milan with a change through Zurich. Where will we be doing immigration and passport control? In Zurich and/or again in Milan? Also do we need to purchase tickets in advance for the train from the Malpensa airport to Lugano or are there ticket machines in the airport station?

If you are connecting through Zurich, you will go through Schengen immigration there, so the flight to Milan is a "domestic" flight. You do go through customs in Milan after you get your luggage, but this is normally just walking out the "Nothing to declare" door.

The train to Lugano goes every hour and does not need to be booked in advance. It is basically a commuter train. Don't know if they have ticket machines for these trains, operated by TILO. I know if you get the SBB app, you can buy tickets with that. Cost is 24.40 CHF full fare, less if you have Half Fare Card or a Swiss Travel Pass.
