Immaculate Conception Day

Hi everyone, I'm working on planning a trip in late November/early December. I recently realized that one of our big travel days falls on a public holiday, Immaculate Conception Day (December 8), and I have a few questions. For background, my plans on this day are to leave Rome fairly early and take a fast train to Naples, where we will catch the Circumvesuviana to Pompeii, spend some time there, and then continue to our hotel in Sorrento.

  1. Overall, is this a holiday more like Christmas or New Years where most things are closed, or is it more like President's Day where the main celebration seems to be furniture sales?
  2. Should we avoid staying in the Spanish Steps area given the papal visit on December 8? I don't know how early closures/re-routes will start.
  3. Will Pompeii be open?

Finally, one unrelated question regarding the weather: do people in Italy prefer umbrellas or raincoats in general? I'm used to the rain here but rarely use umbrellas so I'm just wondering what to expect!

Hi Andrea,

I will share my experiences in Rome around the date of December 8th.

As you noted, it is the celebration of the Immaculate Conception.

It will be slightly more crowded because you will get people traveling to celebrate the holiday and that includes Italians from other regions.

You may see a slight increase in passengers on the city buses. Just be extra mindful of your valuables.

Shops, restaurants, and many street vendors were open the times I was there. I did not see any closures.

Since it falls on a Wednesday this year, it may affect the amount of travelers - less? Also, possibly many people won't be traveling this year.

There will be a big celebration for the papal ceremony, yes, and the area around the Spanish steps can be very, very crowded. Of course this year dictates changes, so who knows.

Once the ceremony is finished and the police clear the area, about 4 pm, it will go back to its "normal" crowding.

It is also considered by many the kickoff to the official Christmas season.

If they do the Christmas markets in Piazza Navona this year, they probably won't be set up until the 2nd week in December.

On one of my trips to Rome, it did rain for a bit a couple of days - umbrella vendors seem to magically appear at the first drop.

As a norm, many travelers including myself and locals, used an umbrella.

Some women just put the hood up on their puffer coat.

Have fun :)

Edit: ( I will leave the other info since it may help someone else reading)

I just realized that for you, December 8th will primarily be the Transit day.

Termini will still be busy in addition to travelers coming in to celebrate the holiday.

To answer your question about staying in the Spanish steps area, I would choose a hotel closer to Termini.

Each of my trips to Rome, I stayed in the Termini area in the same hotel and never ever had an issue.

Pricing is a lot cheaper. I liked the convenience of being close to the train station. There are plenty of restaurants and shops around.

Andrea, regarding Pompeii....
There's nothing on the official website (http://pompeiisites.org/en/) which indicates a closure on December 8th, and aside from some religious attractions (I believe the Vatican Museums will be closed) I don't think most national or civic museums are affected aside from possibly a higher number local/regional visitors.

http://pompeiisites.org/en/visiting-info/timetables-and-tickets/

That said, December 8th is considered a bank holiday, and the scavi site indicates that, currently, advance, timed-entry tickets need to be purchased for those days as well as Saturdays.

http://pompeiisites.org/en/comunicati/the-access-to-the-archaeological-park-of-pompeii-on-saturdays-and-holidays/

They're currently only publishing high-season visiting hours, and advance tickets (https://www.ticketone.it/en/artist/scavi-pompei/parco-archeologico-di-pompei-ingresso-porta-marina-superiore-2780031/) are only available online today through mid-Sept. What with the COVID situation being fluid (yeah, not a popular topic on this forum but unfortunately still a factor) I'd keep an eye on the sites for updates, unexpected closures, changes in visiting rules and/or ticketing mandates, advance ticketing availability, etc. as your trip gets closer.

You're welcome, Andrea! Hope you have a fantastic time in one of my favorite cities!

Editing to add: the ticketing link I gave you, should you want or need to order them in advance, is for the Porta Marina Superiore entrance. That is the entrance you'll want if taking the Circumvesuviana to the scavi and then traveling onward to Sorrento later in the day. The stop you'll want to get off at is Pompei Scavi-Villa dei Misteri; the entrance is just a short walk away. I believe there is luggage storage at the station (lower level) but if not, you can check it at the excavation. Buy your tickets onward to Sorrento when you've finished your scavi visit - or when you arrive at the station - and don't forget to validate them, as well as those for Naples> Pompeii, before boarding!!! :O)
