We are planning to visit Siena on July 2nd and realized this is the day of the Palio. We are staying in Florence and were planning to take the bus into Siena just for the day. Any advice on whether the regular bus schedules will apply or if there will be changes due to this festival. We'd like to see some of the Palio festivities but don't want to miss getting back to Florence that evening.

I don't know if buses have different schedules or modified itinerary during the palio. I don't think so, but you also have the alternative of going down to the station at the bottom of the hill and catch a train back instead. The last train to Florence departs at 9:27 pm and gets to Florence 1h26m later. On that day it might even be faster than the bus since usually there is a lot of traffic on the freeway back to Florence on the day of the Palio.
