Il Caminetto Cooking Class (Lake Como)

My husband and I are thinking about taking the cooking class offered at Ristorante Il Caminetto near Varenna on Lake Como. Is the class worthwhile? What do you learn to cook? Do you get to eat what you've cooked? Thanks!

Kerri, I highly recommend tkaing this class. My fiance and I took it last month. Chef Moreno is awesome! You get a lot for 32 euro; he picks you up in Varenna, zips you up a mountain to his restaurant, teaches the class, feeds you and gives you home-made wine and liquores. We learned to make fresh pasta and sauces, and we ate everything we made afterward. The highlights were the fresh gnocchi, and the simple tomato sauce (which we made at home last week and it was delicious.) From start to finish it takes 4 to 5 hours, but it flies by and if you're into Italian food it's well worth it. Good luck!

I agree! My husband and I took the class in April and it was the highlight of our trip. We learned to make handmade pasta--without a fancy machine to shape the dough--just a rolling pin--plus ravioli fillings using ricotta cheese and fresh herbs grown by the Chef Moreno's father, eggplant pie, and a tasty potato dish. For an appetizer he served the best sausage and parmesan cheese I've ever tasted. The view from the village was worth the trip and we enjoyed Chef Moreno's sense of humor and appreciated him for sharing his talent for preparing fine food. We had a wonderful lunch with wine after the class.
