If we purchase and reserve tickets to the Vatican Museum and are late for our scheduled arrival time, would we still be allowed to enter?
This is what it states on the Vatican's website if you click "General Norms of Purchase" at the bottom of this page:
"Those who do not present themselves at the designated time, will lose their right of access at the chosen time. The unused and still valid prepaid ticket, giving title to entry (as indicated in “Admission Tickets”) may be used for entry via the entrance for visitors without a booking. The management of the Vatican Museums reserves the right to make inspections, and in the case of abuse, to take appropriate measures."
So, I sure wouldn't risk it. Sounds like you could still use your tickets BUT have to stand in the same line as people who don't have them. That line can be very long - it's the one people try to avoid in the FIRST place by pre-booking their tickets - and I see you're also visiting during Holy Week.
Be early NOT late and be dressed properly.
If you arrive late you will miss the skip the line entry option. I believe you will still get in but must go to the end of the line to do so.
Is there a reason why you think you might be late?
Know that if you choose to be late, you will not be allowed to enter. It's pretty simple.
That you know this in advance, you won't be surprised when aren't allowed entry,
We have reservations for 8:30 AM, but recently booked a private tour that overlaps with this.
Upon further investigation, it looks like I can modify my ticket time on their website: https://biglietteriamusei.vatican.va/musei/tickets/do?action=modifica
Looks like I'll be OK.
It does say that modifications are possible but I'd do it now if you already KNOW you are going to be late.
I'm curious why you booked a tour in the first place that was going to overlap? I'm equally curious what tour starts early enough in the A.M. to interfere with an 8:30 AM entry time to the museums?
We were gifted a private tour of the Sistine Chapel, select rooms in the Vatical Museum, St. Peter's Basilica and Bernini's Baldacchino before everything opens to the public. Since we want to tour more of the museum collection on our own, and would have to go back to the museum after St. Peter's, I was curious what a late arrival would entail. Since I can change my time, it's not an issue anymore. Holy Week this year is April 14-20, so we'll miss the larger than normal crowds.
OOPS. Several of your previous posts mentioned being in the city for Holy Week but I see now they were from some years ago
My bad! :O(
No worries. We were in Rome during Holy Week about 6 years ago. It was an amazing experience to be there and attending mass in St. Peter's Square, but it was indeed crowded and we're looking forward to a visit a little more low-key. Thanks for all the feedback.
