Any advice on this subject would be appreciated. We are booked on the RS Best of South Italy tour this September. We have a few days in Rome before the official tour starts. We have several things we want to see in Rome that are not included in the RS tour. Ostia Antica was on my list, but now that I read more about it I wonder if we could make better use of these extra days, as the RS tour does include a visit to Pompeii. On our own, we are going to Vatican City, The Colosseum and Forum, Borghese Gallery. Thanks for any advice!
While OA is often suggested as a substitute for Pompeii it is really a completely different site. First off, OA is much more pleasant and comfortable to visit because it is along the river with trees and shade. I think both are worth a visit because they really are very different sites. OA was a port city that serviced Rome and was not destroyed but buried by river mud from floods. Personally I got a better feel for how people were living in OA than I did in Pompeii.
I agree with previous poster. I have been to both areas.
If you were foregoing something in order to go to OA, I would suggest doing that other 'something'.
In essence I agree with Frank, but there are enough similarities, that if there was a much wished for 'other' activity/destination that is unique from your other already planned activities, then doing only Pompeii would not be a bad thing.
Did both, enjoyed both; there is no wrong choice.
