I am trying to decide between staying in Positano or Sorrento for 2 1/2 days in June. I think i can accomplish most of what i want to do from either location, which is one day in Positano/Amalfi and one day traveling to Capri. If i decide to stay in Positano, would you recommend that I still visit Sorrento for shopping, strolling, eating limoncello, etc.? Or is Sorrento just a convenient location to travel to the other places from? Thank you!
We loved Sorrento but I don’t know that you’d need to visit just for those needs
There is shopping and limoncello in Positano, Amalfi and Capri
There aren’t really any “ sights” to see there.
No interest in Pompeii?
Linda, for what you want to see, your path of least resistance is Sorrento.
Day 1 Train to Naples, Circumvesuvian to Pompeii, drop luggage at station ( downstairs under the tracks)
Visit Pompeii 3-4 hours then on to Sorrento. By Circumvesuvian.
Day 2 Take the earliest ferry to Amalfi, 1hour. (I’d purchase the day before) arrive Amalfi, take the first available bus to Ravello, bus back to Amalfi explore Amalfi then ferry 25m or bus 40 min to Positano. Bus back to Sorrento.
Day 3. Ferry to Capri. 20-30 minutes. Luggage storage at the port. Head up to Anacapri first. Work your way down to Capri town.
Ferry to Naples, 1 + hours. 1night Naples before flight out.
Taxi to Capodicino airport 1/2 hour. Fixed rate should be around 18€.

I've stayed in both Positano and Sorrento, and for us, it's hands down Sorrento. It is much more interesting than Positano. Check out the museums, the presepe in the cathedral, the beautiful park along the coast... And there's plenty of shopping available, as well. Good food, interesting walks.
According to Rick Steves the best of the Amalfi Coast Road begins east of Sorrento and west of Positano (closer to Positano) and ends east of Amalfi and west of Salerno: https://www.ricksteves.com/europe/italy/amalfi-coast. Click on the + sign to the right of At a Glance to see the map.
Another fan of Sorrento, especially for what you say you wish to be doing. Sorrento is larger and has more shopping, restaurants, hotels, etc. to choose from. Positano, while pretty, is really quite small; we were done with it in 1/2 a day. Also, just about everything involves an uphill climb, and the ferries can't dock there is the sea is too choppy. There are generally more ferry runs around the coast from Sorrento than Positano too.
Now, I like as many ferry options as possible as, while ticket prices can add up, they're much easier on my stomach than twisty coastal roads. Or be sure to bring Dramamine or similar (Sea Bands do not work for me at all) if your own stomach is the least bit touchy.
This isn't to say, of course, that Positano doesn't have its fans. It's very much a matter of personal taste.
I see you plan to visit Pompeii en route from Naples? Sorrento will be more convenient from there via local train (the Circumvesuviana didn't frighten us, or you may be able to time your visit to take the one of the 4-runs-per-day Campania Express) and shorter distance by driver than Positano. Oh, and I'm sure it's just a slip of the tongue but you DRINK, not eat, limoncello, and some are better than others, for sure. You may have meant gelato? 😉
These are the busses that will connect the upper town to the port
Public transportation in the center of Sorrento
The center of Sorrento is quite small and can be easily explored on foot. The areas around Marina Piccola and Marina Grande are located beneath the center, so it's more convenient to take a bus to get up the hillside to the center. Both these areas are linked to the center by EAV and Cooperativa Tasso buses.

Just to add if you do plan on staying in Sorrento I recommend staying central and not up in the mountains. Yes the view is wonderful but if you stay in city center you can walk to the train station for your day trips, walk and eat/shop and not be dependent on a shuttle schedule to get you into town. We used it as a base for the Amalfi coast and next time we plan on a much longer stay so we can actually explore Sorrento more.
Sorrento is our favorite. Gerri had a good schedule listed for you. If possible take the ferry back from Positano to Sorrento. The bus can cause motion sickness. We stayed at the Bellevue Syrene in Sorrento which was fabulous, though there are also less expensive hotels near there as well. It was nice to be near the park to take the elevators down to the Marina to catch the ferry. It is near the Centro Storico area with great restaurants and shops, and the sunsets near Villa Communale are awesome over the Bay of Naples.
