If I don't pay to select my own seats on Frecciarossa/argento ....

... I understand that seats will be automatically assigned. Does this happen at the time that I purchase my tickets, or sometime between then and my travel date? If I don't like the assigned seats, can I then choose to pay to change to my own seat choices, or is it just the one shot when you purchase the tickets?

There's four of us and two short legs of the trip, so 16 euros to reserve our seats. Not a big expense, but for the short trips I don't really care that much about seating arrangements; just that we all be seated together.

When my family flies with our young kids we feel compelled to purchase the (exorbitant) seat reservations, because the airlines won't assign seats until the very end and it's very possible that there won't be four seats together. I'll probably spend the money in the end, but just curious to know how it works on TrenItalia.

Since you will receive one PNR code for the all 4 of you, you'll be seated together anyway. Otherwise conductors' job would be a nightmare.

Incidentally, nobody would arrest you if you switched seats with somebody else to be closer, or if you took an empty seat. It's not a flight.

@DonutTime,

I just purchased three train trips for six people today. In my case I was going for the Economy Fare (I wanted to be able to make changes if something unexpected happens). I also decided to purchase business class because the difference was no more than 12 dollars and I was hoping we could get a table for four and a table for two. So I did not pay to choose the seats. On the first trip, we were given back to back rows, not seats across a table (At least that is what I think we got). For the other two trips, we got seats across a table, two rows facing each other. Figure for the first trip we might exchange. If not, we'll deal. As soon as you purchase the tickets you can see what the seats are. As to whether you can change them, I wouldn't know.
