Ideas to fill in 5 days (6-10th September) after Trafalgar tour concludes in Rome.

Hi,
Planning our trip to Italy in September and have 5 days to fill in from conclusion of 10 day Italian Discovery Trafalgar tour which ends back in Rome. Tour takes in Rome(2), Florence, Turin, Lake Como, Milan, Verona Venice(2), Ferrara, Bologna, Assisi and back to Rome.
We have to be in San Marino on 11/09 for Moto GP, and after that we are spending 10 days in & around San Gimignano.
I'm a bit stuck for what to do and hope for some ideas, probably staying put in one spot for 5 nights?
Was thinking maybe Naples as would like to see the Blue Grotto?
Any amazing, not to busy, relaxing places?
Thanks
Corinne

Hi Corrinne,

I went on the Trafalgar tour back on 2012 and filled in five days in Naples and Amalfi coast before the tour. Coincidentally, it was about the same time of the year too. My suggestion would be to see if you can get a hotel in Sorrento, which is a good base to see a lot in that area. Pompei is about 40 minutes away on the local train, ferry's are about a 20 minute trip to Capri (can even take the ferry to Naples), the Siti bus leaves right next to the train station on the spectacular ride down the coast to Positano and Amalfi (make sure you sit on the right side of the bus for the views of the coast). I loved that area!

Add a couple of nights to Roma. It's the Sita bus, if you are looking for schedules online, but from Sorrento to Amalfi it runs about every half hour for most of the day.

6 Sep Rome to Sorrento (4 nights)
7 Sep Excursion to Amalfi and Positano
8 Sep Excursion to Pompeii
9 Sep Excursion to Capri and Blue Grotto
10 Sep Sorrento to Naples (1 night)
11 Sep Naples to San Marino (via Bologna and Rimini ??)

Ravenna (en route to San Marino) would be another option on the night of the 10th Sep.

Head south, but we got a B&B in Sorrento, and boats to Capri (and the Blue Grotto) leave regularly from there. Be aware that access to the Grotto is weather and wave-dependent, and rough waters can prevent access to the Blue Grotto on a given day. If you actually stayed on Capri for a couple of days or more, that wold offer more possible Grotto days then if you just visited for a day from Sorrento, but for us, Sorrento offered more to see and do over several days. You can visit the ruins at Pompeii and/or Herculaneum from Sorrento, as well as a visit for a day to Naples. We're glad we visited Naples for a day, but opted not to stay there.
