Ideas Please!!!

Hello,

I am working through the kinks of my 18 day italy itinerary but I would like to replace Milan with something else, any ideas?

So far my itinerary looks like this;

Fly into Rome

Take train to Milan

8/22-8/24 Milan as base to visit lake como and bellagio

8/24-8/27 Venice stay at beach resort, day trip to Venice

8/27-8/29 Porte Venere to visit Cinque Terrence

8/29-9/1 Rome

9/1-9/4 Sorrento

9/4-9/7 Ischia

9/7-9/8 Rome for flight home

Ideally I'm thinking of doing Rome at the beginning because we will be tired from traveling from the US. which means I will need something in between Venice and Rome for 2-3 days.

Thank you!!!!

Just curious, how much of this trip has had accommodations reserved?

Why not just fly directly into Milan and then stay up at Lake Como area? It's only 45 minutes north of Milan but a long way from Rome?
And why not go ahead and stay in Venice where you can take in the city day and night? It's a special place.
If you have extra time, Rome would be the place to spend it--unless you've been there before.

If you want to visit tiny villages on a lake maybe you should stay there, not in Italy's financial capital with 2,000,000 inhabitants and even more cars.

I'm not saying Milan is not worth a couple of days, the Duomo is a true masterpiece of Gothic architecture, but it depends on what you really want from your vacations. If I had to pick a couple of hours to spend in Bellagio, I'd probably pick late dinner time when day trippers have gone back to Milan.

Same for Venice: there is only one floating city from the 18th century in the world, whereas there are tons of beach resorts. These days the only way to see how Venice really was is walking around the calli (streets) during the evenings, when the crowds of tourists have finally left.
Just my 2 eurocents, of course.

I have to agree.

Stay in Varenna to visit the Lake region, not Milan.
Stay in one of the Cinque Terre villages to visit the Cinque Terre. Portovenere does not have train service.
Stay in Venice - it is too magical !
