Ideas on where to visit and stay

I am new to this forum but have learned so much from everything I have read. I am going to Italy for the first time, arriving July 1. I already have an opportunity to take everything in stride! I need an idea of a town and a place to stay somewhere between Naples and Cortona for 1 night, July 5. Any ideas? I will be driving (terrified) with two teenage girls ages 13 and 14. Thank you in advance.

If terrified of driving, why are you driving with two teenagers? If you have been reading this site for awhile, you know we generally favor public transit unless a car is absolutely necessary. Just pick a place that looks interesting.

I am driving partly due to what I have read on this forum. I am staying 9 nights in Cortona and am of the understanding day trips through Tuscany is best with a car. I am considering Orvieto. Anyone have a suggestion on a place to stay?

We stayed in the lower town at the Hotel Etruria in Orvieto. You can park there. It is a decent hotel. It is good to be scared that way hopefully you will not let your guard down. But who wants to go on vacation stressed about driving in a country they've never been to?

Why not take the high-speed train from Naples to Florence and rent your car there? Will save you a lot of time and terror.

I like Hotel Virgilio in Orvieto. Located right on the Duomo Piazza. It's pretty easy to take the train there and rent a car (it's a popular drop-off point) to continue into Tuscany.

Take the train from Napoli Centrale to Orvieto. The train will be faster than the car. Spend the nite, then pick up your car. It makes no sense to pay for overnight parking.
You then have around an hour and a half drive to Cortona.
