Ideas for travel in northern Italy?

We will have 6 days between Women's World Cup games in Germany and we'd like to travel to northern Italy. We will start in Augsburg and need to end up in Frankfurt. We'd prefer to stay in one spot while in Italy. Any suggestions on destinations and methods of travel? We're a family of 4.

I agree that Verona would be a great base. There is a lot to see there, and easy daytrips can be made from there. I would consider renting an apartment. Not only is it economical, but you will have more space. Not to mention not having to eat every meal out if you don't want to!

An apartment is a great idea for a family, and Incan recommend one in Verona in a perfect location, just right for a familynof four.

You could do a really nice loop by train. From Augsburg it is a short hopmto Munich to pick up the main train line running down into Italy, passing through Bolzano and Verona. You could base there (Verona); it is a charming city and well situated to visit Venice, Lake Garda, etc. To return to Frankfurt, head to Milan and take the train to luzern to spend one night. You can get deicounted tickets for this journey in advance on the Swiss rail site and save about 200 CHF for a family of four. Luzern is only 4 hours from Frankfurt by train the following day.
