Ideas for three days between Turin and Bergamo?

Hi all,
I will have three free days between Turin and Bergamo, April 28-29-30. The only MUST is a soccer game in Bergamo on the 30th (Forza Juve!)... any other suggestions? I am totally free. Could rent a car and explore or could train it. Looking for ideas of what towns to check out and potential budget places to stay... and/or agriturismos. I do enjoy wine, so that could be part of it.

Thanks for the ideas.

The lake district wouldn't be much of a detour. Probably best if the weather is pleasant enough to enjoy being outdoors all the time. I like Stresa (for the Borromean Isles) on Lake Maggiore and Lugano (Switzerland) on the lake of the same name. I haven't been to Varenna on Lake Como, but everyone seems to enjoy it.

The Centovalli train ride between Domodossola (Italy) and Locarno (Switzerland) is a favorite of mine. It has a sort of back-of-beyond feel. There are also good Swiss postbus trips out of Locarno to the Valle Verzasca (which I have taken) and Valle Maggia (which I have not). It's rather likely to be cool and overcast in that area in late April, but spring is a good time to see the little waterfalls along the bus route. Later in the year there's not as much water flow.

A stop in Asti would not be amiss, some of the best Spumante wines don't get exported.

True! The more I think about it, the more I want to focus on wine for this part of my trip. So Asti might be a good start. One of my favorite soccer players has a family winery near Bergamo, too, so I could hit that.

Thanks!
