Ideas for Rome with young kids

We are headed to Rome for 5 days (on the train now!) with our 2 & 4 year old and a very loose schedule. Staying near Vatican. My husband and I have been before and done most of the main sites. We'll go to mass at St. Peter's, likely day trip to Orvieto, and lots of wandering!

If anyone has any fun places for young kids or unique adventures- send them my way!

Hi William,
My husband and I will be with our 5 year old in October. We will only be there for a day (flight the next morning), but plan to spend some time in the Borghese gardens. There are plenty of little rides for kids as well as the zoo. I have been to Rome many times & would prefer to cater to my son’s likes this go around. We also considered a golf cart tour just because he loves when he gets to ride at his grandparents, but with many monuments under restoration for the Jubilee, I didn’t want to spend the money.

Have fun!
Amanda

William, you might look at the "Mama Loves Rome" website for firsthand experiences from a mom with small people. I've referenced this one before for families, and think she has some good ideas and information to share.

Oh, and I'll agree with Amanda's suggestion for Villa Borghese (the park, not Galleria Borghese the museum). "Mama" covers some of that, and here's more from Rome's tourism website:

When my children were that age I made a little scavenger hunt activity book for them while we were in Rome. Kind of like the car ride bingo games we had has children. I included things like the green pharmacy cross, obelisk, fountain, SPQR (which turned into a game of who can spot the most SPQR- it's everywhere from manhole covers to signage), etc. As we strolled around the city they became really good at finding things.
We also booked tours with Joy of Rome that were tailored for kids and families. When they were just a little older they attended Gladiator School- save it for next time you are in Rome!
