We're spending 2 nights in Orvieto and are looking for day trip ideas from Orvieto and back in one day. Recommendations for a guide/driver?
Civita di Bagnoregio. You don't need a guide or driver. Take a bus, it drops you off at the bottom of the hill and you walk up to the town. Very small, but friendly people. RS has a video of it.
Or, you can take the train to Rome, about 1 hour.
Thanks for the suggestion. How tough is that climb/hike to the village? We're eager seniors and game for anything, but the reality of our group of 4 is 2 bad backs, 2 bad knees (At least), 2 replaced hips, one not working too well and one case of COPD. Can we make it to the top? We've been to Rome. I do appreciate your help.
I'll sound a note of warning, given what you've described as your collective physical limitations. We visited CdB several years ago. I can't remember exactly how old we were, but we were definitely in the "senior" range. We are quite fit due to regular working out, but I found that walk very taxing. I also thought it not worth the effort. The area is replete with charming towns that are interesting. CdB isn't. There is a similar thread on this forum, which you should check. People have listed a lot of alternative destinations.
Two nights in Orvieto and you're looking for day trips? When do you plan to see Orvieto?
Thanks for your concern. We will arrive in Orvieto on the preceding afternoon, spend the night and then again in the morning and subsequent evening. We've been to Orvieto before so we won't need a full 2 days to investigate her wonders. A day trip would be a pleasant diversion for us and our guests, who can't spend more than a few minutes inside a cathedral, no matter how spectacular, or they burst into flames. It is really for our own protection that we leave for a 5 - 7 hour Day trip.
My opinion of Civita di Bagnoregio is similar to Rosalyn's. I thought it not worth the trip to see a village where almost no one lives except feral cats. I have an issue with heights and did not realize from the pictures how deep the valley is that the bridge linking the hill town spans and wow, did my height fear kick in. Many on my RS tour found the steepness of the bridge very taxing.
There are many others who think Civita is wonderful, though.
