ideas for bad weather in Ortisei

We arrived a day late due to airlines foul up, nice afternoon Monday, hiked in the fog all day yesterday and now have 3 full days of bad weather predicted before we leave for Lake Como. Thinking of bailing on this part of the trip and leaving for Lake Como or some other reasonable destination logistics wise to salvage this part of the trip. We do not have a car, we were planning on picking one up at the Milan train station on Saturday.

So sorry, kcdav! We had snow in early September that threw us and caused me to have to buy a base layer! You just never know!

I do see on Il Meteo (Best Italian weather app, IMO) that Friday morning should be sunny with rain moving in about 15:00, so hopefully you can seize the day early and get a good hike in.

Bolzano is a good day trip but the buses can get crowded because so many people have the same idea. Depends on how crowded the area is right now. One tactic we’ve used it to wait until late morning to take a bus to Bolzano, after the crowds have gone. In Bolzano, you can walk under the porticos, browse the shops, go to the museum. I do believe reservations at the museum are a good idea, but it has been along time since we last toured it.

I sometimes take a poor weather day as an opportunity to get a manicure at the Hotel Adler.

Hope the bad weather is behind for all of us! Last night was a deluge in Lauterbrunnen. Looks like a dry afternoon and off-and-on light rain in the coming days. We are doing a lot more down low rather than at high elevation as a result.

We have enjoyed lovely weather here on the south side of the Alps—-the Valais, Lago di Garda, and now at Lago Maggiore (Verbania). It has rained a bit at night, but today it is clear and sunny for the day. Tomorrow, however, it is supposed to rain for our day at Lago di Orta. Friday rain as well, then clear and sunny on Saturday..

@kcdav, we are also in the rain in Ortisei. What a bummer about your logistics getting here. Hoping for a break in the weather this afternoon as a couple of apps show and off to Menaggio tomorrow morning. I’m sure you’ll make the right call about whether to stay or move on.

Well, we got incredibly lucky today, we did hike # 6 from Laurel's book. Rained on the bus ride to Dosses, but stopped shortly after we started hiking. We took Col Raiser to Rifugio Fermeda for lunch, then hiked to Seceda, hiked all around there and then took the cable car back to Ortisei. We encountered sun and blue skies from lunchtime on. The forecast doesn't look great for tomorrow but then it didn't today either.

Wow! Great day! If you hiked up to the top of Seceda, you are a better hiker than I am! That is a climb! Brava!

Thanks Laurel, we were a bit beat, but after a rest and a shower, a light dinner and a glass of wine, felt somewhat revived. The weather turned out so beautifully we wanted to so as much hiking as we could.

So glad to hear the weather turned around for you! What a lovely hike! I sometimes am bad about letting the weather affect my experience, even if I’m going indoors. Although I do enjoy watching the changing skies.

I’m curious about Ortisei… does it get a fair amount of sun, or would you say it’s in shadow more of the day? I’ve only been to Castelrotto and near to the lifts for Alpi di Suisi at Compatsh. I am looking toward a mid June visit. Hope the weather continues to cooperate for your travels :)
