Ideas for a Super condensed tour of Rome

We just realized we will be in Rome for approx. for part of a day and evening (the day we arrive frome the U.S. ) until we depart for Tuscany the next day.

We depart for our trip this Sunday, so no time to book anything in advance we don't think and were hoping to get some ideas of what we could tour without having pre arranged anything. On previous trips we have done the Vatican tour (not sure if it was the official one ) and we saw the Coliseum, that's about it.

We would really appreciate any suggestions the experience travelers on this forum can give.

We will also have part of a day and night at the end of our Tuscany tour before we return to the U.S.

Thanks for your time.

The first day you are there do the Rick Steves walk across Rome. I don't have the book with me, but you could start at Campo di Fiori or Piazza Navona and wind your way across Rome seeing the Pantheon, the Trevi Fountain and ending up at the Spanish Steps. If it is early enough for the "passagiata" (sp?) when you get to the Spanish Steps, the cafes on the Via Veneto are a great place to sit and sip wine and watch the people go by.

For the end of your trip, if you get to Rome in time you really should make reservations to see the Borghese Gallery. You have to have reservations and can only get in at certain times so that may not be an option. As an alternative, I don't know how early your flight out is, but Orvieto is a great place to spend the night on your last night if your plane doesn't leave early. It is a beautiful town that is in Umbria but not far from Rome.

Hi Sherry,

We really like the idea of taking Rick's walk since so many of the museums do require reservations. We get in at 8:50 am

We will be going to Orvieto the day after we arrive to meet our bike trip but from what you say it sounds like a viable option for the day before we will sadly have to return home.

Thank you so much for your prompt reply and your time.

Safe journeys.

Hi DiDi--I second the recommendation for Borghese Gallery. You could probably get there, make reservations for later in the day, and then rent bikes or a power-assist pedal cart and tour the beautiful grounds of Villa Borghese.

Thanks Elizabeth, that is also a great idea especially since we love to bike.

I really appreciate all the prompt replies all the members of the graffiti wall share. It really makes this wide world of ours a more personal place.

We JUST did this, although we had 2 days in Rome and are now in Florence. You can get one of several "Hop on, Hop off" bus tours of the city that hits all the highlights in about two hours on an open air bus. We did it the first day without getting off and on the second took it again because we then knew what we wanted to see, and got off and on several times. With your short schedule, you might consider taking the whole circle once and going again to stop where you like. They go to the Vatican, Colosseum, Spanish Steps, Trevie Fountain, etc., and are cheaper than a taxi and faster than walking. You can catch them at any of the stops and pay the driver, or start in front of Termini station if arriving by train. Cost is 14-16 euros per person for 24 hours and well worth it. Ciao.
