We are flying into Rome (FCO) and will arrive in the late afternoon. We're connecting with friends the following day a few hours north in Tuscany (near Montalcino). We looking for a one night stay somewhere interesting between FCO and our ultimate destination. We'll have a car and plan to take our time on the drive north the following day. Any ideas on an interesting place to crash/explore for our first night? We're returning to Rome later in the trip, so we'd rather go somewhere new. Any coastal towns worth visiting? We'll be getting a late start so we probably want to stay within an hour's drive (or so) of the airport. Any suggestions are appreciated.

We have not explored the coast yet, but Orvieto might be a good spot. Stay at Casa Selita B&B if you have a car - they are right below the walls of the town. She is a wonderful host with a delicious breakfast, and will provide you with flashlights to walk through her olive grove so you can walk the few feet up to the stairs into the city - you can unpack and relax with a beautiful walk through the streets and sleep with soft down comforters….ahhhhhh
