I’ve never been to Italy and I’ll be traveling solo from a week-long friends trip in Sicily to a flight home six days later from Florence. This will be the last week of June. I’m into good food, charming piazzas where I can read, write, people watch, walking, beautiful sights, and accessible but not overrun places. I don’t need to visit any specific sights or cities - except I must visit Lucca and I’d love to take a cooking class or two. I’m thinking of hopping a train and meandering north - Tropea looks interesting, then somewhere else en route to Orvieta, Lucca, Florence for a day or two? But I could fly and really do anything… So, what would you do?!
We took the train recently from Naples to Sicily. While we enjoyed it, I think you will lose a lot of time doing that. As it is your first trip to Italy, you really want to maximize your time on the ground. I would probably fly from Palermo to Florence, and then spend your next week around Florence, Lucca, etc.
It depend on your travel style. Some people are happy with one night stops, I find them a little stressful, I seem to waste a lot of time rounding up my belongings and losing things and looking for them, or otherwise I unpack very little and seem not to relax either. But flying for a short flight is a load of wasted time and bad for the environment. So I would probably take the train to look at the scenery and just overnight in one place on the way.
Hi,
I saw your post.
I just recently wrote an article regarding a 14 day guide to Italy. You might find some inspiration: https://innovateandeat.com/italy/14-day-italy-tour/
Let me know if it helps!
All the best,
Giancarlo
