I booked ORD - KEF - FCO on Iceland Air, arriving in Rome at 3:00 PM on a Friday, August. I've flown to Rome, but it was 20 years ago, and we rented a car and left.
Do we do any customs/immigration in KEF or will it be in Rome?
Upon arrival, we are planning a train to Florence. It will be me, kids (12, 14) and I am hoping to make us all pack only carryons (?Rick Steves classic back door bags?, but may end up with checked things). It also says on our baggage info, "Passengers can check in approved carry-on bags at no cost at the check-in desk or at the gate", has anyone gate checked things with Iceland Air? That would save us time then not having to collect luggage afterwards that was otherwise checked, if we gate checked things.
I know there are many factors contributing, but how much time should I allow to get to the train at FCO - Termini or Tirbutina - Florence? And along that one, would you chose the route that goes to Termini or Tirbutina, or does it really matter? Schedules are not out for August, but playing with May, the prices differ quite a bit.
Anything else?

I am going to address the gate checked issue. I don’t think you would save any time since you would pick up at luggage claim either way.
