iBooks or Kindle: Which Digital Editions are Better?

Going to Venice and Florence in a few days, and I want to buy each city guidebook.

Is one format (iBooks or Kindle) better than the other? In most cases, I'll be using an iPhone, but also might use my iPad for reading on the plane.

Does either or both have the audioguides? Better maps in one or the other?

Thanks!

If you mean the RS guides, I use the kindle version with the kindle app on my Ipad Mini and they are fine. I have not tried to look at books on my iphone.

I can't comment on how the ibook version compares.

I’ve really tried to use electronic versions of guidebooks but it’s been a big fail. Trying to flip pages, get back and forth from a description to the map to the transportation routes etc. is difficult and time consuming. This from one who reads almost exclusively on a Kindle. But guidebooks, no, paper only.

I buy them in Kindle. I would not carry paper as saving weight is too important. I do a lot of highlighting and bookmarks to help me find things easier as we are traveling. But I would hate to have to pack along 6 pounds of books!

I believe each of the books the OP is referring to weighs 8 ounces. I would not carry 6 pounds of books either!

My experience is that guidebooks are hard to access on an e-reader because of the time and effort it takes to find specific pages or items. I love my Kindle for general reading and load it with books for trips, but paper is better for guidebooks.

On this website you can buy the RS Pocket Venice and Pocket Florence, excellent portable lightweight volumes. Or buy a guidebook for Italy and tear out the relevant pages. Or, if you're cheap like me, check one out of the library and photocopy relevant pages.

I do the same as Laura. Kindle version on Kindle app on iPad Mini. This works very well on the go.

I previously hated the guidebook on the Kindle ereader. Much better on the iPad!!

Have not used them on iBooks and prefer the paper version at home for planning purposes.
