I made it to Italy!!

First, I want to start by stating clearly that I am not encouraging anyone to travel to Italy at this time that doesn’t feel personally comfortable with it. I am posting this purely for information for others who may be considering the same method of entry. I have received two doses of the Moderna vaccine and am following all national and local health guidelines while here.

I entered Italy as a tourist this morning using Delta’s Covid-tested flight from JFK-Milan. A few things weren’t clear about how it would work so I’ll outline how it went. First, if you’re not familiar with the Covid-tested flights on Delta, all passengers are required to take 3 Covid tests in order to enter Italy without having to quarantine. This is even for those passengers who have already been fully vaccinated. You organize your own PCR test, 72 hours before your flight to Italy departs, then take a rapid Antigen test at JFK, and a third rapid Antigen test when you land in Milan.

PCR test: this is just my experience, it may be different for you. My main options in my home town to get tested were CVS and Walgreens. I put the same info into both websites and CVS wanted $139 for the test while Walgreens was free. I, being cheap, chose Walgreens. They had lots of times available and I got my results back within about 30 hours after the swab was taken. It is not clear on the website how you have to present the PCR results at JFK, so I opted to print them out. Many other passengers were simply showing the agents their results on their phones.

JFK Antigen test: this was the messiest part. Delta tells you numerous times to show up at JFK 4.5 hours before your flight and to go to the Arrivals hall of Terminal 4 and follow the signs for Delta Covid-tested flights. There were no signs. The place where you go is probably obvious to others, it’s called “Xpress Check” but the only signage talked about PCR tests and having an appt, which was not what we were doing. After asking some people working there where to go, I found the line to stand in. If you arrive on time (4.5 hours early), don’t worry that the first 30 minutes of standing there the line never moves. They didn’t start setting up tables to process us until 4 hours before.

The next confusion was about the Passenger Locator Form. On Delta’s website it says you need to complete “additional forms” for the flight. When I clicked on the link, it took me to the Italian website which clearly stated that the forms were to be completed after check-in and before boarding. Delta made it very clear that we couldn’t check-in until after the Antigen test. Yet all the agents kept asking us if we had our PLF completed yet. It wasn’t an issue, but it created more chaos. Total time from starting to check passengers to arriving at my gate at JFK was 90 minutes.

The test results came quickly and there were more forms to fill out while we waited. The flight was easy (mostly empty) and we were asked during the flight to fill out another form for landing to give to the Italian police. The entering process at Malpensa was actually the easiest part.

We stood in line to give our last form to the police, then the regular immigration line, then collected any checked bags. The final Antigen test was the only strange part. You walked completely out of the controlled area of the airport to where you would meet family/friends, and then you had to walk all the way to the end of the terminal to where they were doing the final Antigen test, which officially released you from quarantine. I thought it was strange that they didn’t do it inside the controlled area, and after we got our results, no one was checking as we left the waiting area to make sure we did it.

The total time from walking off the plane to getting the final Covid test results was 45 minutes.

Sorry for such a long post, but in case other people are thinking about using one of these flights to come to Italy, it worked!!

Very worthwhile information for anyone traveling to Italy at this time. How about giving us an update when you’re out and about - what’s the atmosphere for tourists, are restaurants open - just general ideas. Knowing things will change but it would be great to hear your experiences.
Have a great time!

Thanks so much for posting! I don't plan to travel to Italy this year but TBH it's wonderful to read your detailed description. It makes me think we can all travel soon-ish!!

The flight was easy (mostly empty)

I’m wondering how smoothly airport testing in the States and in Italy will be when flights are full? Hopefully by then testing won’t be needed?
Please let us know the process you experience on the way home and give us a trip report.

That was my thought as well. I would guess there were about 40 people on the flight? If it was full, how long would it take them to do all the testing and paperwork? However, if vaccination cards start being accepted later in the summer, then that could change things too.

Good info for people traveling in the near future. Our trip to France isn't until late October, so, hopefully by then, the virus numbers will be down enough that we won't need a PCR test to travel. Time will tell.

Yes, thanks for posting the details. Maybe when you are home you could give us a quick update and report. I am also hoping things change before our trip late August.

Thanks for the very informative post Bill.

Would love to hear about the processes on the return trip home and hope you post. I'm contemplating a trip to Florence during the first week of July and it would be very helpful to me, and others, to read what it's like over there.

I’m starting with a week in Bologna as a base to explore Emilia-Romagna and then heading to Florence and Lucca. Once I’m down there I’ll do a new post describing the situation on the ground.

Wow - you did a great job with this post. Giving time frame, hiccups and the potential for more delays as flights start to fill is so helpful. Also, being specific about the location of the test site in Italy relieves some stress for jet-lagged passengers. Thanks for taking the time to be so thorough.

Splendido. I am sure they will work out some of the kinks before we fly from Heathrow to Pisa on BA in mid July.

Thanks.
I will be interested to know what is open in all the places you plan to visit....museums, cafes, gardens, restaurants.
If they are open, what procedures do you have to go through to enter said places?

Thank you for your precious time reporting back for us! Great info and you can tell we are all hungry for more as you travel and experience your locations through Italy! I am hoping by Oct when we go all is less stressful and complicated. You seem to have managed quite well! Enjoy every minute and be safe! Ciao and grazie!

Bill,
Thank you for this report!!! My husband and I are on that COVID tested flight from JFK to Milan-Malpensa on June 13-14! What you described helps us process all that we've been reading so far.
Question #1: We have seen that one needs a PCR test 48 hours for the Alitalia/Delta flight, but 72 hours for the Delta flight. You indicated you got yours within 72 hours. Any comments?
Question #2: when you arrived at Malpensa, did you rent a car, or use public transportation? The airport website said travelers from the US aren't allowed on buses or trains upon arrival. We figure this is for passengers who are not on COVID tested flights (who need to quarantine.)
Thank you for your tips. Enjoy your trip!
Cathy

Tandems2, the discrepancy between Delta and Alitalia is confusing, but it’s the Delta people who are checking your PCR results, so 72 hours is fine. When I arrived at Malpensa I took the Malpensa Express train to Milano Centrale and then another train to Bologna. No problems and no one is checking anyway. Once you get your rapid Antigen results in Milan, you’re a free bird!!

So helpful. Thanks for posting and I look forward to an “insider’s perspective” as you are traveling. And also your flight back since we hope to be doing the same in august.

Thanks for the report!
Is a quite new procedure and maybe will be better arranged soon, even for larger groups of travellers.

Yes, the situation here in Italy is pretty quite. Still some claim for the curfew (at 10pm at the moment), but in general people is moving free. Sometimes there is the temperature check when you enter in public places, but nothing more.
Today I'm in Bologna too: the students are claiming a lot and there sometimes protests at night (mainly in the university area, near piazza Verdi), but in general is everything fine. Last Sunday I saw in Modena a little group fo Americans since a long time.

Bill, I was on the Delta Covid tested flight JFK-FCO on May 22. Had the PCR test done at my primary care dr.’s office. 72 hrs. before my flight. Luckily, my insurance covered the cost. Got my results 24 hrs. Later. Just printed out the results. That was easy enough. I have to say the whole process had me pretty anxious. But, a small price to pay to return to Italy. We probably wouldn’t have considered going if we had nit been fully vaccinated!
Delta recommended that you get to the airport 4.5 hours before your flight. However, when we arrived we were told testing for the FCO flight wouldn’t begin until 4 pm. Our flight was at 7:41 pm. They actually began the testing before 4 pm. After the test, we were directed to a separate room to wait for the results. Our paperwork was checked while we waited for results. After clearing that hurdle , we were checked in. I also filled out the Locator form online before I arrived at JFK. I wasn’t asked to show this info when I arrived in Italy!
The flight was not sold out by any means, so we were able to stretch out a bit. So unusual, but a welcomed development. Upon arrival at FCO, we were ushered to the testing site. All went well and we were on our way to pick up our luggage and pass through passport control.
We’re at our friend’s b&b outside of San Gimingnano. The town seems to be coming alive with tourists, but not the hoards that are usually there. Obviously, no tour buses.
A little bit different when visiting Volterra. Mostly locals and not a large tourist presence. I’d say that we are being welcomed back. A woman in Volterra told me it was nice to hear an American accent after so long. Made my day!
As this is a short visit for us, our friend made an appointment for us to be tested in Siena for our return flight to the US. Price for test is €50. Will see if re-entry to US is as smooth.
It’s great to be back!

Camille,

Thanks for the report. Very helpful, as was Bill's original post.
We'd love to hear how things go after your test in Siena and on your trip home.

Great info, Bill. I am also booked for that same flight in 2 weeks. You mentioned that you are fully vaccinated, but we’re you ever asked to show proof of vaccination as a condition of your travel or entry into Italy?

Viajera, there is no need to be vaccinated to take these Delta Covid-tested flights. I only mentioned that as part of my decision process about being comfortable traveling internationally now.

Thanks for the fantastic info. My family and I are booked on a United flight Frankfurt then on to Milan on Lufthansa from SFO. We are renting a car and going to Cinque Terra, then San Gimiagno and finally Rome. If there is anyone out there who’s had a United and/or layover experience, can you fill us in on those experiences too.

Thanks

Mark- I'm assuming you know the difference but just in case. The OP (Bill) flew in on a direct (non-stop) special Covid -free (tested) fight that has to go through very specific protocols. His experience is going to be a lot different from "regular" flights like you are taking. I apologize if you are aware and up on this difference.

Mark, to be specific, Americans are allowed to enter on any flight. We can only get out of quarantining if we enter on a COVID-tested flight. At this point I believe those are only offered by Delta and American, and they have to be nonstop from the US to Italy. You may not stop in Europe on the way into Italy if you don’t want to quarantine. Of course, if your trip is later this summer/year, Americans may be allowed to enter with proof of vaccination and not have to quarantine. No info has been provided about exactly when that will start.

Unfortunately United hasn’t relayed the same information to us. It advises on what type and when to get tested, even selling rapid tests for the return, but says nothing of the info you provided.

This is very useful info! I am flying covid tested flight Atlanta to Rome on June 22. I have couple of questions if you or someone else could answer, I would be much obliged!

  1. Walgreens offers 3 tests, I assume I can discount rapid antigen. They have PCR that takes few days and also ID NOW 24 hour test which is also molecular. Does Delta honor ID NOW as well or no? It is FDA approved.

  2. Those 72 hours, are they 72 hours before landing in Rome or before flight departure?

  3. There are also companies that do PCR within 24 hours not on Delta list, but they charge arm and leg. Can one use one of those?

Thank you very much
Edin

Edin,

1) I believe only the PCR is accepted for Covid-tested flights. I didn’t see anything regarding ID NOW
2) 72 hours before your flight departs ATL
3) You can use any company that does PCR tests. Delta has a relationship with CVS, which is why they mention them. I got mine at Walgreens for free. The results came in about 30 hours.

Hope you have a great trip!!
