Leaving May 5th for 10 nights in Italy w/3 other friends. I've been twice before but the others have never been. I was delegated the travel agent for this trip & to be honest I'm researched out. I don't think I can learn anything else to prepare for the trip as I've read my RS guidebooks to death & read all these forum posts & a few others for the last 6 months. A big thank you to all those here that have responded to any of my questions & I will post how everything turned out when I return. In the meantime happy travels to all of you getting ready to leave for your destinations & safe travels...well, maybe I'll read just a few more posts.
Stephanie - Maybe double check a few more things - will there be holidays or major events going on while you're there that you should anticipate. (I failed to find out that the weekend we wanted to be in Villefranche Sur Mer was the weekend of the Monaco Gran Prix.)
Are there festivals you should know about? We stumbled on a wine festival in Carcassonne I'm glad we didn't miss. Google the tourism offices of the towns you'll be in and those nearby. Research is half the fun!
Relax and have a good time!!!
You've done your research, and you're the returning expert. Try not to fall into the role of tour director as well. You may end up exhausted and resentful of your friends who are just going along for the ride. I suggest you broach this subject with them before the trip. Tell them you'll be the director for 2 days, then they have to step it up. You don't have to hail every taxi and figure out every bus and train schedule. Have fun!
