I remember rick recommended a trail created by locals for the alternate route from Manarola to corniglia starting as a part of his city walk by some vineyards. Can someone please send me that info if you have it?! I’d hate to miss this!!!
Pretty sure I found it online. While parts of the book are missing, of course, it looks like the detail of the hike you're looking for is all here.
Scroll down to "Alternative Route - Manarola - Corniglia Hike via Volastra": read that and scroll down a bit further to the next page as well.
We did the Volastra to Corniglia hike a few years back and it was great. If you walk "up" the road in Manarola you will locate the shuttle to Volastra pretty easily. We asked for directions down by the harbor and were directed to walk up the hill and sure enough we walked right into where the shuttle (a window van) departs from. For us, late 60's, it was a great help to use the shuttle and only do the shortened (downward) Volastra to Corniglia section of the hike. It was a wonderful hike and I would not miss it but there are a ton of going down stairs so for us the shortened hike ws perfect. Younger more fit hikers were very happy having completed the entire Manarola to Corniglia hike, for me the short version ws perfect.
Thanks to all who responded!! We went back to the restaurant where we thought we left the pages and we got them back!! But your info would have been really helpful! We did the entire hike and it was absolutely beautiful. Thanks for your help!!!
I am thinking about going back to the CT soon and possibly doing that hike, too. How crowded with tourists was it? If it's in the Rick Steves book, then clearly it's not a secret.
How hard was the hike? How long did it take?
Terrific! Happy to hear that you had a bang-up hike!
Now, go rest your heels and have a great dinner + some craft brews at Cantina di Miky (Monterosso) if you haven't already. :O)
Andrew, it was quite a strenuous hike—a LOT of hills/stairs both up and down (we didn’t take the shuttle to Volastra) but we’re both in our mid-sixties and were able to do it just fine (we’re in pretty good shape). And it was WELL worth it—stunning views of the sea, both towns and vineyards, gardens, and vast expanses. Hope you get to go and enjoy it!!!
Thank you!!
